Day 3 - the swelling has gone down some
What a happy girl...
Emily had a good night last night... She had some Lortab right before bed, although I think she would have been fine without it. Aside from the normal hospital wake-ups, she slept well and woke up happy.
Dr. Siddiqi's resident came in at about 10:30 a.m. She cut the stitches that held in the drain and pulled all 3 inches of it out. Emily wasn't too happy about this - I'm sure that it hurt. The incision looks good. It actually extends on to the top part of her arm. There is some redness around the incision, so the resident marked it and we have to make sure that it doesn't extend past the marking.
Emily has 5 more days of the IV antibiotics through the PICC line. There is some redness around it too, but hopefully it's just irritation from the adhesive.
Emily has a gauze dressing wrapped around her and then a compression dressing around that. Dr. Siddiqi wants it left on until Sunday to make sure that fluid doesn't build up under the incision. I have to say that she looks a little like the Hunchback of Notre Dame with the bulk of the gauze and dressing on her back.
I asked the nurse this morning about the CT scan. She took me over to the computer and looked up the report. At the end, it said, "no evidence of craniosynostosis". Yea!!! I was so worried... The radiology tech did say that Dr. Siddiqi will want to review the scans himself rather than just going by the report.
So, onward and upward we go. We go back to Dr. Siddiqi in two weeks to discuss "scar management". The steri-strips covering the incision will just fall off in the meantime. When we got home today, I cleaned out the medical supply linen closet and boxed up the dressings and ointments. I told Ryan that I am a little sad... I know that sounds a little weird, but it almost seems like part of Emily is gone. I'm definitely not sad to see her in pain and to have to do daily dressing changes. It's just weird... I almost can't remember her without the hemangioma. We will have quite the stories to tell her when she gets older. Hopefully the scar will be minimal and the pictures will help her understand what happen to her when she was so little.
