Megan and Emily got their ears pierced one year ago - Megan's for her birthday, Emily's just because. Well, one of Emily's and both of Megan's ears ended up getting infected so out came 1 out of 4 earrings (yes - Emily still has one earring in). Megan has been begging to get her ears repierced. I really wanted to let her do it and repierce Emily's other ear at the same time.
When I took Megan to Wal-Mart, I saw that they sold the ear piercer for $5 if you bought the earrings. I asked the associate that worked in jewelry about the ear piercer and she said that it works exactly like the one that they use. I remembered that we still had Megan's original starter earrings and I got thinking... I could pierce Emily's other ear using one of Megan's original earrings and then we could redo Megan's ears with the new earrings (of course - after sterilizing everything). Cha-ching!! I could save about $10 by doing it myself!!
Then I started to worry. At Wal-Mart when kids get their ears pierced, they will have two associates do it at the same time (one at each ear). If I did Megan's, she would only have one ear done at a time. What if she would only let me do one ear? Then I would have TWO kids rocking the one earring look!!! I tried to talk her into just getting it done at the store. She would have nothing to do with it. She decided that she wanted me to do it and wouldn't listen to anything else.
So off we went with Megan's new blue butterfly earrings and our $5 ear piercer. We got home, assembled everything, and prepared Megan for what was to come. I pierced one ear. She did cry but she let me pierce the other ear!! I couldn't believe it!! I was so proud of her that I just had to take pictures. Now, I still haven't pierced Emily's ears yet so she is still the one earring wonder....

Shelly,
Was searching for my GF's blog and came across your interesting one with your kids. Came to the part about your YDD having the pirate look with one earring and had to laugh. I have two girls, ages 2.5 and six months. The 2.5 yr would only let the nice lady at Claire's pierce one ear and she was frightened to do the other one. That was six months ago and she won't go into a Claire's because she is afraid they are going to pierce her other ear and it will hurt.
I think you were a smart mommy for doing your ODD's ear piercing at home. I'd definately do your YDD, Emily soon. After reading your wonderful detailed blog entry, I asked her if she wanted her other ear pierced and she said yes, but not at Claire's. When I said, would she let me do it at home, she said yes and "...you won't hurt me mommy." I told her if I did it, it might hurt a little and she said that would be okay. Am off to Wal*Mart today and buy the Ear Piercer and set of earring for her. I think she'll do fine.
After sleeping on it, I was wondering if Missy's ear piercing goes well, should I consider doing her younger sister, Sandi, at home too? What do you think about piercing an infant at six months at home? I know in some latin countries and Spain, it is done within days of birth, so it must be okay.
Any thoughts, guides for infant ear piercing or suggestions to make it easier would be appreciated. I'm pretty sure I could do and it would be a nice mother daughter bond for sure. Read your profile being a OB nurse. Do they do it as a newborn in your hospital? If so, do they use something similar to the Ear Piercer from Wal*Mart?
TIA
