Doing something that you hate in somewhere that you love

For many people, laundry is one of those chores that is...  Well, a chore.  One of those necessary evils that is detested and put off for as long as possible.  I think that this is especially true if the room that you do thus said chore is dark, ugly, or just plain blah.  At our old house, our laundry area was down in the dark basement that and was only framed wood, concrete, and lots and lots of crap.

When we moved to this house, I was so excited to have a laundry room on the same floor as the bedrooms (2nd level).  Not only is it close to put the laundry away, but it is an actual room!  When we moved in, the room was painted in yellow stripes and stenciled in sunflowers.  Yuck.  Not my style.

I went to my kids' dentist about 1 1/2 years ago and found the perfect color scheme for my laundry room.  In fact, I borrowed their gallon of paint to have it color matched (thanks Dr. Roth!!).  After some paint and cheap accessories, it has now become a room that I love and am proud of!!  I am lucky that I actually kind of like doing laundry (and am a bit obsessive over it) but having this room just makes me happy.

1. A gallon of Behr green paint (my dad calls it baby poop green) - about $24 I think.
2.  I painted the nasty oak cabinets black.  Easy project for a small area.  I think about $13 for a quart of paint at Home Depot.  I also added some knobs from Home Depot - $1.50 each.
3.  Valance - clearance priced at Target - $3.75.
4.  Rug - clearance priced at Target - $4.00
5.  Old wicker laundry basket I spray painted black - $7.50 for two cans of paint.
6.  Clock from Family Dollar - $5.00.
7.  Definition art - $0.50 for the color copy at The UPS Store and $1.00 for the frame (Dollar Tree).

1.  Shelves purchased on clearance at Downeast Outlet - $1.00 each.
2.  Green circle placemat - clearance at Walmart - $0.75.
3.  Black flat wicker thing - Family Dollar for $3.00.
4.  Lamp (which was working but the cord bugged me so I just cut it off) - $3.00 at DI, shade for $1.00 at DI.  Fabric to cover the shade - about $1.50 at Walmart.
5.  Small white frame - $1.00 at Dollar Tree.  Inside in the frame is a scrap of fabric that I had.

Just a better view of the wall coming in.  The only thing I haven't talked about is the message board.  That was my big splurge at Kohl's - $7.50.

So for $84, I have a bright, fun room that is COMPLETELY different from the original and makes me happy.  My laundry room is at the top of the stairs and the very first thing that I see.  Although the green may not be everyone's taste, I loved doing something completely different from the rest of the house.  If you have a laundry room (craft room, office, etc.), I challenge you to do something to make it more of a room that you like to be in.  And maybe, just maybe, that laundry won't be so much of a chore...  :-)

Oh - I did forget to add....  Something that would make my room SO much better....

I can dream, can't I????

I LOVE the green...you did a great job! My laundry room is like your previous one...not so fun. I can make it through with the one we have, because that is on my list of "musts" in our next house!

We re-did McKenzie's room in these colors, but it is lacking accessories. Thanks for the pictures and cute ideas (on a budget). I need to try Family Dollar more often for little things.
