I've been reading on a lot of blogs and websites about painting cabinets. One night I was looking on www.infarrantlycreative.blogspot.com. She is a super crafty lady that has awesome ideas. She turned her kitchen from this:
Into this:
I love it!! I think that I would paint my cabinets white instead of black however... My kitchen is pretty little and I'm afraid that black would make it seem really dark.
Then I was surfing the net last night and found this... Giani Granite. You can PAINT laminate (formica) countertops and to make them look like granite! I looked on a couple of other message boards and am loving the results!! The website that I posted has a kit that is only $50... WAAAY cheaper than granite!!

The end product turns out like this (or one of several other colors):
You can also paint the countertops with spray paint (like the sand looking one)... Infinite possibilities - you just have to do some kind of epoxy top coat.
What do you think??? I'm thinking I could have a whole new looking kitchen for under $100. But it is a lot of work and I could end up hating it....

The dining room turned out so good I am now starting on the living room and then comes the kitchen---I too would love to have different cabinets and granite, but alas have no money.........I guess you could always try the granite paint and if you don't like it, there is laminate that looks exactly like granite at home depot but for much cheaper!!!

You should go for it... my only advice would be plan to do the whole thing in a certain time.. If you string it along months like me it will be miserable!
the before looks almost exactly like my kitchen. I so want to do that!
